The Bounty Hunter Film Review Synopsis:

The Bounty Hunter is a romantic comedy written by Sarah Thorp, and directed by Andy Tennant.

The story is about a bounty hunter called Milo Boyd, played by Gerard Butler. His job is to hunt down a target who skipped bail. The target is a female journalist, who also happens to be his former wife Nicole Hurly (played by Jennifer Aniston).

Milo manages to track down Nicole, and places her under arrest. However, Milo quickly discovers there are unanticipated “forces” preventing him from claiming his bounty.

Milo learns that prior to Nicole’s arrest, she was investigating a serious story about the underground world of drugs and police corruption. Subsequently, Milo is forced to dodge bullets with Nicole, when the bad guys try to execute their plans to ‘eliminate’ their key threat (Nicole).

The Bounty Hunter Film Review

This movie has undergone various project name changes since the film’s conception. Film titles that were initially considered included Bounty Hunter, The Bounty, and Bounty.

The film title ‘The Bounty Hunter’ is finally confirmed through the release of Sony Picture’s first film trailer for this movie.

The Bounty Hunter is a story written by Sarah Thorp. The movie is directed by Andy Tennant, who has a knack for directing successful romantic comedies such as ‘Hitch’ and ‘Fools Gold’.

The Bounty Hunter movie, is a romantic comedy starring Gerard Butler Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis.

The story is about a failed police man called Milo Boyd (Gerard Butler) who becomes a Bounty Hunter by profession. Milo Boyd is given the job of retrieving a target who skipped bail. This target is a female journalist who also happens to be his ex-wife ‘Nicole’ played by Jennifer Aniston.

Milo manages to track down Nicole at Monmouth Park Race Track. One of our favorite scenes from the movie, is when Nicole and Milo are talking casually, when the race track alarm suddenly goes off in the background and Nicole gallops away like a race horse!

The timing of Nicole’s quick escape co-incides perfectly with the race event in the background.

Milo eventually captures Nicole against her will and dumps her in the boot his car in broad day light, in front of witnesses.

Although Nicole fights back, the director portrays Nicole as a stereo-typical female victim. For example, Nicole was unwilling to let go of her expensive designer hand bag throughout the ordeal of being captured. It is unclear how much she spent on buying the handbag, but one would assume she must have spent her life savings on it.

Although Milo successfully captures his target, he quickly discovers there are unanticipated “forces” preventing him from claiming his bounty.

Milo learns that prior to Nicole’s arrest, she was investigating a serious story about the underground world of drugs and police corruption. Subsequently, Milo is forced to dodge bullets and go under cover with Nicole, when the bad guys try to execute their plans to ‘eliminate’ their key threat (Nicole).

The pursuit is a complex one, involving guns and unimaginable threats such as being pelted by a firing line of golf balls.

The story focuses mostly on the dynamic relationship between Gerard Butler and Jennifer’s character. The story is riddled with opposing forces, sides and contradictions manifesting in the form of quarrels and power struggles between the two. The dialectical tensions between both characters places the relationship in a constant state of flux.

Handcuffs are used in this movie as a prop and a symbol of power. Although Milo uses the handcuffs to control Nicole, the position of power is reversed when Milo is handcuffed by Nicole when he lets his guard down.

Handcuffs are commonly used in movies starring Gerard Butler where there is an underlying sexual theme weaving throughout the story. For example, in Tomb Raider, the Cradle of Life, Angelina Jolie handcuffs Gerard Butler after she seduces him into a position of vulnerability. In The Bounty Hunter, Jennifer Aniston doesn’t seduce Gerard Butler in the same manner. Instead, she straddles him in bed (whilst being handcuffed to the bed post), as she tries to reach for the gun on the bed side.

Above: Gerard Butler is often seen hand cuffed in movies that have an underlying sexual theme weaving throughout the story. For example, handcuffs are used in a bedroom scene in both the Bounty Hunter (Gerard Butler and Jennifer Aniston) and Tomb Raider (Gerard Butler).

It is worth noting that Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler are indirectly connected through a mutual acquaintance: Angelina Jolie. To elaborate, Gerard Butler is connected to Angelina Jolie as a former co-star in Tomb Raider, The Cradle of life. Jennifer Aniston is connected to Angelina Jolie through her ex husband Brad Pitt, who is now in an open relationship with Angelina Jolie. This common acquaintance is unlikely to have had any affect on Gerard Butler’s and Jennifer Aniston’s professional & personal relationship.

“Apart from Brad Pitt, Gerard Butler is perhaps the only actor who has kissed both Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston”.

Some men would LOVE to be in Gerard Butler’s shoes. Gerard Butler is one lucky man.

On a different note, we think it is important to inform Gerard Butler fans that Gerard Butler plays an American in this movie – which means we will not get to listen to his Scottish accent in The Bounty Hunter.

This romantic comedy has a different tone in contrast with Gerard Butler’s previous romantic comedy The Ugly Truth. In The Ugly Truth the humour is more sexually explicit and geared towards shock value. In The Bounty Hunter, the humour is a more discrete and subtle, paying a lot of detailed attention to the timing, deliverance and the setting (environment) .

The Movie underwent various project name changes including ‘The Bounty’, ‘Bounty’ ‘Bounty Hunter’ & ‘The Bounty Hunter’
The name of Jennifer Aniston’s character was originally ‘Casidy’. It was later changed to ‘Nicole’. Sony pictures have not notified the press or media about this change which explains why a majority of websites are still referring to Jennifer’s character as ‘Casidy’. Please refer to the Bounty Hunter Trailer above for verification that Jennifer’s on screen name is Nicole.
Although Gerard Butler was pelted by golf balls in this movie, Gerard Butler is actually an experienced golfer in real life.
Gerard Butler had a small wardrobe for this movie, which meant he had to wear some outfits more than once.
Gerard Butler had a body double in this movie.
